Summary: | READ ACROSS AMERICA. Students at the Franklin Early Childhood Center participated recently in the National Education Association's Read Across America program. This year, March 1 was chosen as the day when all children nationwide were to read with an adult. At Franklin, the school library was converted into a living room, with rocking chairs for the readers, where children gathered around to listen to such favorites as "Old McDonald Had an Apartment" and "Cinderella Penguin." Readers included superintendent of schools Charles Fowler, deputy superintendent of schools Myrna Uhlich, Hewlett Elementary School principal Mildred David, librarian Marlene Morris and school bus driver Tony Ward. WEB MAKING. Members of the Computer Club at Lynbrook High School are working with chairwoman Polly Talbot of the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce's Web Site Committee to create an informative Web site for area residents. Using Web tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver, the students are gathering data and designing a site featuring member information, a calendar of events, and an "About Lynbrook" section with links to members' business Web sites. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY. The CollegeBound Network, a Staten Island distributor of educational publications, is sponsoring a Student of the Year scholarship competition, open to all high school juniors and seniors nationwide. Entrants must respond to the following: "Recent world events have introduced us to many everyday heroes. Imagine that you are a hero or heroine in the future. How did you earn your 'hero' status, and how did your college education play a role?" Two grand-prize winners will be announced June 17, and each wins a $1,000 scholarship and assorted other prizes. Applications are available online at www.CollegeBound.net, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to The CollegeBound Network, Student of the Year, 1200 South Ave., Suite 202, Staten Island, N.Y. 10314. Deadline is May 15. |
