Summary:"We have a long tradition at Massapequa of having a bonfire. It's a tradition of ours the evening prior to our homecoming event that is supervised by the Massapequa Fire Department," said schools Superintendent Lawrence Pereira. "This year, very tragically, as they were lighting the fire, some fumes escaped causing a problem." It all occurred on the school's athletic field, located at 4925 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Emergency officials said they received a radio alert from their firefighters at the scene at about 7:15 p.m. reporting the injuries.
