Summary: | Jacksonville-In an on-field ceremony after the Titans' 33-14 victory over the Jaguars yesterday, Lamar Hunt presented the AFC championship trophy to Bud Adams. And thereby closed the book on the American Football League. Forty years ago, they were the first two men to commit to the new venture at a meeting in Adams' basement. Although the Texas oilman's Houston Oilers won the first two AFL championships, they had never qualified for the Super Bowl since the NFL-AFL merger. Transferred to Tennessee three years ago and renamed the Titans before the 1999 season, the team became the last original AFL club to appear in the roman numeral spectacular. Tennessee offensive lineman Bruce Matthews will make his first Super Bowl appearance after 17 years in the league. His brother, linebacker Clay Matthews, played 19 seasons without the satisfaction of a trip to the championship game. |
