Summary:FEEDBACK School Safety Vs. Searches We asked for your reactions to presidential candidate Elizabeth Dole's proposal that school officials - as a way to reduce school crime - search the lockers and backpacks of students and test them for drug use, subject to their parents' approval. I think that locker and backpack searches are a good thing. Locker and backpack searches would help clean up schools \[even though\] some kids would not like them. Is it good to invade privacy for security purposes? Maybe not; it could make schools more like a prison and more nerve-racking than it already is. - Scott Schild, grade 10 Smithtown High School I don't think that locker and backpack searches are a good idea because it would violate people's rights against search and seizures. Searches should be done only if police have established a motive and/or probable cause. But otherwise, I would feel that these searches should not be permitted.
