Summary: | Calling drought conditions the worst since August 1995, when a series of wildfires ravaged 6,850 acres of pine barrens, state and Suffolk County officials yesterday closed 140,000 acres of parks, pine barrens and nature preserves to visitors. And water restrictions have been implemented in Suffolk County, where rainfall is 1.85 inches below normal, and were recommended in Nassau County where rainfall is 2.15 inches below normal. The decision to close 40,000 acres of county park sites was made after a 4-acre fire, caused by a human, broke out yesterday at Robert Cushman County Park near Riverhead, which is near a residential neighborhood, said Peter Scully, assistant deputy county executive for Suffolk County. |
