Summary:As one of the thousands of NASCAR race fans here on Long Island, I was so glad to see your editorial endorsement of Donald Trump's plan to build a super speedway in Calverton {"Trump Raceway in Calverton Worth Considering," March 2}. If Newsday is such a fan of auto racing, why can't we get better (any) race coverage in the sports pages? John S. Warren. East Hampton We are required to hold a commercial driver's license, pass yearly physicals, submit to random drug and alcohol testing and qualify on a physical agility test. Although we have to meet all these requirements, bus drivers are routinely paid in the $9-to-$12 range. We must work in split shifts with long unpaid layovers and minimum benefits. If a livable wage were offered for picking up the children, perhaps in line with the wage sanitation workers receive to pick up the garbage, then there would be more skilled drivers attracted to the position. There is currently a critical shortage of qualified bus drivers in the area. Even the mechanics who make the repairs to the school buses are not paid on a par with mechanics in other industries. [Ellis] Henican wants to have it both ways. Since the cardinal has not spoken about this issue, Henican is determined to assign some sinister ulterior motive to that fact. Henican can fantasize all he wants about the relationship between the cardinal and the Catholic League; he shouldn't write about it unless he knows the facts. Joseph Zwilling. Manhattan.
