Summary:WHAT IS A cottage garden? The definition varies widely on what is one of the more popular forms of home landscaping. In "America's Cottage Gardens" published in 1990 by Random House, author Patricia Thorpe argues that even though this kind of garden developed long ago in England and Europe and became a well-recognized style during the 18th and 19th Centuries, many of the small yards around the country these days are in fact cottage gardens. American cottage gardens are created "in the same spirit that prompted English cottage gardeners," Thorpe observes, although they are "usually created in complete ignorance of that tradition."
