Summary:CORRECTION: As a result of a transcribing error, a letter yesterday regarding an interview with Pat Buchanan misspelled the writer's name. His name is Stuart P. Besen. Pg. A02 NS 6/21/95 The New York State Department of Transportation has a grandiose plan to widen the Long Island Expressway and add a lane from the Queens County line to Medford {"Into the Stretch," June 2}. This extensive effort and cash outlay is intended to reduce traffic on the LIE. What will it take to make these "traffic experts" realize that HOV lanes don't work? The states of Virginia and California have had these additional lanes for more years than New York. Their studies conclude that the increase of traffic exceeds the number of lanes added. Does this suggest that the New York State DOT may try an experiment and pave from the Long Island Sound to the Great South Bay? Or will it finally realize that the only wise way to reduce traffic is to eliminate the '50's automobile mentality? This can be achieved by investing more in our ecologically friendly and economically efficient mass transit system.
