Summary:In his effort to separate [Ben Zwirn] from his liberal connections {"Gulotta Guffaw: Zwirn's a Tax-and-Spend Liberal," Viewpoints, Oct. 2}, Lawrence C. Levy celebrates Zwirn's decision as supervisor of the Town of North Hempstead "to slow down a proposal to convert a vacant Roslyn Heights garden apartment into permanent housing for the homeless." We are also told that "Zwirn has also been an obstacle to group homes for the mentally ill." It is nice to know how quickly Zwirn identifies those who are most vunerable and who have little if any political clout before he goes on to abandon them for the sake of political expediency. It doesn't look good for widows and orphans in Nassau County if Zwirn becomes county executive. John M. Cooney. North Merrick* * * Even more disturbing is the tendency to bury deep within the paper any concretely negative fact regarding Zwirn's less than stellar voting record (Oct. 19, Page 33) and a condemnation of Zwirn by one of his former top aides (Oct. 5, Page 29). As a Gulotta supporter, I am angry with this insidious tabloid-style manipulation of the facts. Clearly, our opinions differ. Mine appears in the op-ed section. Keep yours where it belongs. Judy Schwartz. Roslyn* * * According to Newsday {"Zwirn Aide Faces Criminal Charges Over Family Feud," Dec. 11, 1991}, Zwirn "acknowledged that the prospect of charges could jeopardize the [Richard Middlemark] appointemnt." Despite this knowledge, Zwirn proceeded to appoint Middlemark to a $73,000 political patronage position in the Town of North Hempstead.
