Summary: | [Sandra Rosado]'s industriousness and sense of responsibility are commendable. But there's a hitch. Sandra's family receives welfare benefits. According to officials in her home state, Connecticut, if her family was to continue receiving public assistance, Sandra had to dispose of her savings account. We expect families receiving public assistance to make sure their children attend school and complete high school. Ten unexcused absences in a semester trigger attendance monitoring. A family's welfare check can then be lowered if the student has two unexcused absences in a month. We expect the unemployed to seek jobs or enroll in classes to get marketable skills. Welfare recipients are required by law to take part in our jobs program. |
