Summary:In its latest effort to teach young people about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs, the state Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse has published a revised curriculum designed for teaching the state's 3 million students in grades K-12. The curriculum guide is structured so that educators may involve their classes in projects and discussions revolving around what the guide calls "prevention messages." Students in the lower grades are taught lessons such as how to recognize an alcoholic beverage as opposed to other beverages and the various dangers behind it. "It's a crucial effort to educate children about alcohol, which is the most commonly used and abused drug in America," [Richard Chady] said. "By teaching them about the choices they have and the consequences of alcohol, we hope to minimize future problems."
