Summary:A sort of ancestor of Disney theme parks was built in Chicago in 1893, a world's fair, the Columbian Exposition, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. A great array of buildings in classical architecture were built around Grand Basin, a Disneyesque man-made lake. The buildings were of a substance that combined plaster, cement and jute, and were painted alabaster white. Together they were known as White City. At night, electric lights flooded the facades, giving one of our country's great songs the line, "Thine alabaster cities gleam." Inside one of those white buildings was an electric stove, but the American housewife did not have an electric stove, an electric light or any electric appliance.
