Summary: | Former Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos was a main target in the [Rudolph Giuliani] probe and was indicted with his wife and [Adnan Khashoggi] in October, 1988. Prior to seeking an indictment, Giuliani was mentioned in a State Department cable as having "guaranteed" a conviction. A copy of the cable was obtained by New York Newsday. Giuliani later denied ever saying he had promised a conviction. Ferdinand Marcos died in September, 1989. His death in exile took much of the steam out of the prosecution's case. Giuliani left his post as a federal prosecutor in January, 1989, and announced his Republican mayoral candidacy a few months later. He lost in a close election last November to David Dinkins. Some of Giuliani's critics contended that he pursued some criminal cases for political mileage, an allegation Giuliani has always denied. |
