Summary:Bowing to pressure from residents and local politicians, Huntington Town Highway Superintendent William Naughton has promised he will try to stop storm water runoff from entering three private ponds in Huntington Station through a town-owned culvert pipe. Storm water has been entering the Lenox Road Ponds, which are linked, through a pipe that the town installed in 1957 to collect runoff from property between Lenox Road and Jericho Turnpike. About nine storm pipes feed into the main pipe, which runs under Lenox Road and into one of the ponds. Residents say the runoff is slowly polluting the ponds, which are a popular site for fishing and jogging. Silt is accumulating on the water beds, while chemicals and nutrients in the runoff are spurring the growth of algae, depleting the water's oxygen supply and choking off pond life, they charge. Earlier this summer, they launched a campaign to urge Huntington Town to remove the 4-foot-diameter pipe and divert the runoff elsewhere.
