Summary:The main upstate rival to [Ralph Marino]'s candidacy, Sen. Jay P. Rolison (R-Poughkeepsie), was not available for comment. The third candidate for the position, Deputy Majority Leader John Dunne (R-Garden City), who bucked the Nassau organization's designation of Marino by seeking the top spot himself, met with Marino last night and offered his support. Marino has spent recent weeks criss-crossing the state, meeting privately with GOP senators to discuss issues and ask for their support. Several upstate senators said yesterday that they had been convinced by those conversations that if Marino became majority leader, he would not reflect a parochial view favoring Long Island. Eight upstate senators told The Associated Press yesterday they would support Marino. Their votes, combined with those of Long Island's nine senators, two from New York City and two from Westchester, would give Marino the majority. Sources familiar with Marino's campaign said other senators who had not yet agreed to announce their support for Marino would give him about 21 votes.
