Summary: | "I somehow feel that I failed you," he said, but the crowd yelled back, "No, no." Throughout the night, Republicans wandered in a daze, glum-faced at the results that showed, right from the beginning, [Michael LoGrande] losing to Assemb. Patrick Halpin (D-Lindenhurst) after a bitterly fought race. Some consoled themselves at the two bars, where vodka and beer were popular drinks. Joseph DiGiorgio, an uncle of LoGrande's from Mineola, had his LoGrande hat in hand and an elephant pin in his lapel. He said the party-turned-wake was the first such event he had attended. "I expected my nephew to get a higher vote than this. I expected to win." Earlier in the evening, before the polls closed, the ballroom in the hotel began filling with Republicans who expected to celebrate a LoGrande victory. They believed in their polls, which showed the incumbent with a sizable lead, and their mood was jovial. Warren Greene, LoGrande's press spokesman, was upbeat. |
