Summary:At times The Island recalls George Lucas' THX 1138 (1971), about a future society in which sex is forbidden and everyone looks the same; Soylent Green (1973), in which humans are harvested as a new source of food; Logan's Run (1976), in which Michael York and Jenny Agutter try to escape a world in which life ends at age 30; Coma (1978), a medical thriller in which patients are kept suspended in comas for future use for organ replacement; Total Recall (1990), in which Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a man who discovers his true identity; and Gattaca (1997), in which Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman star in a future society seeking genetic perfection. In The Island people like Lincoln Six Echo ([Ewan McGregor]) and Jordan Two Delta ([Scarlett Johansson]) are "survivors'' of a natural world that's no longer inhabitable. The exception is a place called "the Island'', the last pathogen-free zone on Earth - and a lottery determines who gets to go this uncontaminated paradise. When Lincoln stumbles upon the truth of their existence through friendly technician McCord (Steve Buscemi), he and Jordan are forced to flee to survive - and their escape leads them to Los Angeles.
