Summary:The latest action movie from director Michael Bay (The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbour and Bad Boys I and II) is The Island (M), starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. A sci-fi futuristic thriller, it leads today's reviews, which also include the English comedy-drama Ladies in Lavender (PG) and the sex comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin (R16). The movie itself is a clone of previous such films as THX 1138, Soylent Green, Logan's Run, Coma, Total Recall and Gattaca. It stars Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson as two "survivors'' of a natural world no longer inhabitable, except for a place called "the Island'', with a lottery determining who gets to go to this uncontaminated paradise. In the meantime, they live in a strictly controlled refuge that regulates their lives for optimum health. Ladies in Lavender: Two grand dames of British cinema - Maggie Smith and Judi Dench - star in this romantic drama set in 1936 on the Cornwall coast. Ursula (Dench) and Janet (Smith) are ageing spinster sisters who have only each other, and a cheeky housekeeper (Miriam Margoyles), for company. Janet once had love but lost it in World War 1, while Ursula has never had love to lose.
