Summary: | I REFER to the report on the recent study done by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia which showed that schoolchildren are eating fried chicken, fries, chocolates, ice-cream, carbonated drinks, cream biscuits and jeruk in schools. This shows some canteen operators have been openly flouting the School Canteen Guidelines. CAP had already brought to the attention of the Ministry of Health to some schools in Penang which were selling fast food like chicken nuggets and fries, junk food and drinks, which were highly coloured, sugared, salted, or contained too much preservative. Fizzy drinks and other sweetened or coloured drinks could be replaced with plain drinking water. Water fountains or dispensers could be placed in school compounds and canteens to encourage children to drink water. |
