Many churches and country clubs have singles groups. "People are willing to meet you and include you in their events," says Knowles. Most services, like match.com and eharmony.com, have people fill out a detailed checklist about their age, tastes, finances, hobbies, likes and dislikes, and what they are looking for in a mate. They also ask clients to write a biographical sketch and post a recent photo of themselves. Match.com has a feature that allows people to "wink" at each other -- send a message that shows up in a person's mailbox, expressing their interest. From there the relationship can progress to an exchange of e-mails and actual dates. Katherine Patton, who met her husband, Robert Greene, online, had a different experience. Patton was 50 years old when she moved back to Sarasota after a 20-year absence. She no longer knew anyone. Connecting with people online was both a time saver and a way to get started.
