Summary: | BERKELEY - A distraught and apparently intoxicated man with a rifle stood off police on a freeway ramp for nearly four hours - closing Highway 24 in both directions at Claremont Avenue and shutting down BART service east of Oakland - before surrendering early Tuesday. The tense standoff, which began when the man threatened the life of his estranged wife, forced traffic to detour onto Oakland and Berkeley streets, giving a slow start to the early morning commute. Berkeley Deputy Police Chief Roy Meisner identified the man as John Fields, 35, who has been separated from his wife, who was not named, for three weeks. Meisner said Fields was apparently intoxicated. |
