Summary: | Plant sterols are extracts from plants and are found in low levels in vegetables, fruit, vegetable oils, nuts, and grains. Researchers have known for a long time that plant sterols, in levels higher than those found in foods, are able to lower blood cholesterol. Only recently have plant sterols been added to some margarines to help people control their blood cholesterol levels. More specifically, plant sterols can lower LDL cholesterol levels, while leaving HDL cholesterol levels alone, which is beneficial. |
