Summary: | In recent years, as the Buffs have brought better and better athletes into their program, [Bill McCartney] has always come to letter-of-intent day with a recruiting story. The fabled One That Got Away. So who broke his heart this winter? There are any number of candidates. Walter Reggans, the state's top defensive lineman, went to Michigan. Pat Riley and Fred Harris, a pair of top outside linebackers from Louisiana, hummed the CU fight song right up until they went elsewhere. A Detroit running back reneged, citing pressure tactics. "No heartbreakers," McCartney said. "When I look at what we got, we're two deep everywhere right now. If you saw Riley (6-foot-6, 248 pounds) on the hoof, you'd say, `Wow, I sure would like to have him.' So he would fit that description. But in light of the fact we recruited pretty well at that position, he's not a heartbreaker." When McCartney looks at outside 'backer seven months before kickoff, he sees a starting combo of Ron Woolfork, a converted quarterback, and William Polk, a transfer from Oregon State. So if either Sam Rogers, a juco transfer, Prop 48 holdout DeShannon Campbell, or Houston recruit Daryl Price can play, they'll get the chance. |
