Summary:[Michael Burleigh]'s book is principally about Germany under Hitler and the war which he prosecuted together with Mussolini, the Fascist leader of Italy. It is a book about the social, emotional and psychological transformation which Hitler wrought on Germany as well as Europe. The book has that Johnsonian touch which is appropriate for it won for Burleigh the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. It does not really recreate the pompous and archaic Johnsonian style, but here and there, words appear which are likely to intimidate the more casual reader; for example: tergiversation; polyformity; quotidian; insouciance; excrescences; revanchism; polonophobia, etc. In the last analysis, Burleigh is still every bit a historian because his research is rigorous and he displays an authoritative knowledge of Europe, without which it would be difficult for a scholar to tender his ideas and argue convincingly his perceptions of people, events and developments. Because of his intimate familiarity with Europe, those not familiar with Europe would need a map to keep abreast of Burleigh's description of events moving across Europe.
