Summary: | OKLAHOMA EXECUTION: Despite an appeal from Mexican President Vicente Fox, Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating denied clemency for a Mexican citizen on death row. The state attorney general is expected to ask for Aug. 21 as the execution date for Gerardo Valdez, who was sentenced to die for a 1989 shooting. ENTANGLED WHALE: Marine scientists freed a North Atlantic right whale entangled in rope, but a second whale, one that has been the subject of several failed rescue attempts, continued swimming north with a rope embedded in its jaw. Two whale-watching vessels assisted rescuers who untangled the marine giant from rope and a buoy within hours of its sighting 30 miles east of Portsmouth, N.H., said Joanne Jarzobski, a spokeswoman for the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, Mass. REMAINS FOUND: The body of a man who vanished while snowboarding on Mount Rainier two years ago has been found. Mount Rainier National Park rangers searching for two missing climbers discovered William Tres Tietjen's remains Tuesday beneath a waterfall near the Nisqually Glacier at the 5,800-foot level of the 14,411-foot peak. The climbers the rangers had been seeking were later found in good condition. |
