Summary:For a normal child of [Rece]'s age, the heart is about the size of a strawberry. But Rece's heart had enlarged to more than twice its normal size. [Maryanne Kessel] got the call about Rece's donor at 9:55 p.m. Feb. 19, and after contacting the doctors and going over the donor profiles, they accepted the heart at about midnight. [James Tweddell]'s team flew back to Milwaukee in about two hours and took the Flight for Life helicopter to Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa. By the time the group landed, lead surgeon [Robert Jaquiss] and his team already were removing Rece's heart and preparing him to receive the donor heart.
