Summary:DETROIT - With the stroke of a pen, murder suspect Jack Kevorkian walked out of a Waterford Township courtroom Wednesday evening a free man, facing the task of defending himself in the biggest legal battle of his life. Armed with a videotape showing an assisted suicide and a wealth of state laws from which to choose, Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca answered Kevorkian's public challenge in a big way Wednesday, charging him with first-degree murder, assisting in a suicide and delivering a controlled substance - all in the nationally televised death of Thomas Youk. Kevorkian surrendered himself to Waterford Township police around 3:30 p.m., and Magistrate Robert Crawford of 51st District Court allowed him to leave under a signed promise to not take part in any deaths pending his Dec. 9 preliminary examination. If he fails to show for court, he will have to pay $750,000.
