Summary: | [Paul Simon], who also said he supported the union, was among 15 senators who wrote Labor Secretary [Lynn Martin], asking her to appoint someone to mediate the dispute, which centers around the UAW's demand that Caterpillar accept a contract similar to one with Deere & Co. of Moline. In Delaware, about 200 UAW workers from Caterpillar's plant in York, Pa., about 75 miles away, picketed outside the hotel where the company held its shareholders meeting. The strike affects only Caterpillar plants in Illinois but members said they showed up to give support. |
