Summary:[Paul Simon], who also said he supported the union, was among 15 senators who wrote Labor Secretary [Lynn Martin], asking her to appoint someone to mediate the dispute, which centers around the UAW's demand that Caterpillar accept a contract similar to one with Deere & Co. of Moline. The strike affects only Caterpillar plants in Illinois but members said they showed up to give support.
