Summary: | "Mrs. Henderson Presents" sounds like a lusty hoot, albeit a well- mannered lusty hoot. Has Dame Judi Dench ever starred in anything that wasn't well-mannered? British cinema's reigning queen plays opposite streetwise Cockney fireplug Bob Hoskins as a bored widow who, during World War II, opens a nudie revue theater to entertain the boys in uniform. Director Stephen Frears, who is a master at many genres -- noir ("The Grifters"), brainy thriller ("Dirty Pretty Things"), hip romance ("High Fidelity"), social realism ("Liam"), costume drama ("Dangerous Liaisons") -- goes for broad comedy (no pun intended), and with his track record, he'll probably do just fine. Rated R. PHOTOS 1-2: COLOR COVERS PHOTO 3: COLOR, THE WEINSTEIN CO. PHOTO 4: COLOR, CBS; MRS. HENDERSON (Judi Dench) and disreputable showman Vivian Van Dam (Bob Hoskins) become partners in "Mrs. Henderson Presents." [Dan Barry] , a Norwalk native, is one of 16 castaways on "Survivor: Panama -- Exile Island," starting Thursday on CBS. |
