Summary: | Two years ago, Mark Philippoussis was laid up in bed in Miami Beach following a complex third knee surgery, wondering not so much whether he would ever win a Grand Slam but whether he would ever play professional tennis again at a high level. He's not in the physical condition of his adversary, Switzerland's Roger Federer. But this is grass-court tennis and a dominating serve, which Philippoussis possesses, can cover up a number of deficiencies. Federer's stretch and blocked returns, which floated back to Andy Roddick's baseline in the semis, will be intercepted by Philippoussis' volleying. Federer is going to have to return to Philippoussis' feet, where he is more vulnerable, and it's not certain he can do that with any consistency. Nor is it certain Philippoussis can break Federer. |
