Summary:About two years ago, a midwestern book dealer and friend of [John D. Townsend]'s mentioned the document to Art Cohn, executive director of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, which sponsored the underwater exploration that led to the discovery of the sunken gunboat. The dealer told Cohn that Townsend owned a Revolutionary War-period document dealing with the fleet involved in the famous battle off Valcour Island. Cohn thought to himself, "I'm sure it's something I've seen," but he asked for help contacting Townsend. When Cohn called, Townsend agreed to send a copy of the document to the museum offices in Ferrisburgh, Vt. Townsend loaned the document to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for an exhibit, and, planning to donate the document to the museum, also had it appraised this fall by a prominent dealer in American historical manuscripts, Joe Rubinfine of West Palm Beach, Fla.
