Summary:Venture capitalists were like sheep, diving into the newest new thing only if their colleagues did. If you were an entrepreneur growing a solid company with only 25 percent growth potential, the venture capitalists weren't interested. Whereas traditional venture investing returns had been 15 percent to 20 percent per year, the expectations had crept up to 50 percent and 100 percent based on the boom of the NASDAQ. Entrepreneurs and venture capitalists were just the nick in the skin that let the infection take hold. For an infection to fester and grow we need a rich, frothy culture medium -- enter the investment bankers. "As I See It," an opinion column on matters of public interest based on personal reflections, appears occasionally on the Saturday Opinion page.
