Summary:This is a terrific opportunity for boards of education, working with superintendents, their staffs and local communities, for it encourages them to link new measurements of success with planning for the future. In setting standards, we must remember that a "good education" is much more than getting good grades on tests. A recent Gallup/Phi Delta Kappa poll found that the public believes that the most important goal of education is preparing students for good citizenship. This is at the heart of Education Commissioner Theodore S. Sergi's Back-to-School Message. Learning responsibility for oneself and others, honesty, integrity and other positive behaviors are important elements of developing positive character traits and preparing our youth for good citizenship.
