Summary: | As the owner of a busy North End salon, Denise Rogers has been hearing about the affair between President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky for months. The release Friday of details from independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr's report did little to change her opinion of the president. "We love Clinton," Rogers said outside her Yvonne's Unisex beauty shop on Hartford's Albany Avenue. "He's for black people. He's for everybody." For six years, Hartford -- where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 10 to 1 -- has been Clinton Country in Connecticut. In 1996, Clinton won 83 percent of the Hartford vote, his largest majority in the state. But the release Friday of much of Starr's report -- including explicit testimony from Lewinsky about unusual sexual encounters that, if true, would mean the president lied under oath and to the public -- has deeply divided voters. Some who have supported him in the past are wondering whether he still can lead effectively. |
