Summary:Joe's has been an East Dayton mainstay for 42 years, perched in the shadow of a Domino's, believe it or not, at Airway and Smithville. Ultra-clean, simple decor makes for an inviting dining room, where you can eat some of the very best pizza Montgomery County has to offer: Medium-thick, crispy crust, wired sauce and a heavy blanket of toppings and cheese. Served on a piece of thick foil and looking much bigger than its 14 inches, a Joe's pizza will definitely send you home happy. Alas, even we mighty and steel-gutted Leadbelly Boys sometimes meet our match. Not often, mind you, but sometimes. In this case, we strode haughtily into the unassuming-looking Hoagie's, thinking there was no pizza in town that could get the best of us. But we will admit when we're beaten. And so we admit that the 18-inch whopper that the chuckling waitress brought to our table was more than we could handle. Thin crust but still a thick pizza, with a killer dose of cheese and a humdingin' sauce. Carrying our leftovers with us, we left with our tails between our Leadbelly legs. The big fun at Pappy's is browsing a menu lineup of specialty and gourmet pizzas that range from `not sure we like the sound of that' to `why the heck didn't we think of that?' There's the Bleu Cheese Buffalo (chicken breast, Pappy's buffalo sauce, onions and Bleu cheese crumbs), the BLT (light ranch sauce, bacon, mozzarella, fresh lettuce, tomato and drizzled with mayo) and something called the Potato Ham (honey ham, grilled garlic potato slices, light ranch sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese). We liked the sound of that last one, but, hey, we're purists. So we got our usual pepperoni/ onion and were quite pleased, thankyouverymuch.
