Summary:3. R 12 insulation for 2 x 4-inch walls and R20 insulation for 2 x 6-inch walls. (The higher the R value, the better the insulation.) Batt insulation is easy to install between the stud spaces. All spaces must be completely filled to prevent heat loss. Be sure to cut the insulation carefully; do not fold or overlap pieces to make them fit. All insulation should fit snugly, but must not be compressed as it loses some of its "R" value under these conditions. When the insulating is finished, a vapor barrier must be installed on the warm side or inside of the framed wall before you are ready to drywall. Four-mil or six-mil polyethylene can now be stapled to the framing. Use only enough staples to hold the poly in place. Any joints should be overlapped at least one stud space. Since you are dealing with a basement, you will not have to put poly on the ceiling. Electrical outlets should be enclosed in poly or a commercial poly box before you cover the walls. These areas, as well as those around the windows, should be caulked with acoustical sealant to the main layer of polyethylene.
