Summary:The conversion of car factories to flexible production methods will give Chrysler, the US arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler, the ability to build up to 40 per cent more vehicles than it does now, according to Tom LaSorda, the division's chief executive. Mr LaSorda said the flexibility would allow Chrysler to add new low-volume vehicles more cheaply, an essential switch as the market moves from having a small number of very high volume vehicles on sale to a plethora of niche models. Mr LaSorda also indicated that more Chrysler components could be used by German sister brand Mercedes, a move which has been fought for years by theMercedes engineers.
