Summary:In this impasse into which France proposes to lead Europe, I do not blame the farmers. My J'accuse is directed at the captains of French global industry who are displaying mute gutless opportunism. The rearguard war in respect to agriculture is reflective of a political environment where the market economy has been vilified, where the French were the "champions" of the ridiculous "bra wars" this summer with China and where the president of France, supposedly of the "centre right", attacks "liberalism", which he claims is as dangerous ideology as communism. The French government is seeking to derail globalisation and thereby jeopardise the prospects of inclusive growth; rather than giving chances for poverty to be reduced, it will be dramatically increased.
