Retailers will have been further cheered by figures from the Retail FootFall Index, showing Boxing Day shopping numbers up 17.4 per cent this year compared with Boxing Day 2004, even before yesterday's big post-Christmas sales launches. Shoppers were out in force at Bluewater, the shopping complex in north Kent, despite wintry conditions in south-east England, with a queue of 2,000 outside Next at 3am in readiness for the store's 5am opening.
