Summary:In this election year, Mr [George W Bush] and the Republican-led Congress have been eager to avoid the issue. Mr Bush has consistently opposed a rise in the minimum wage, saying he wants to avoid additional costs for small businesses and companies creating jobs. According to several labour economists who support Mr [John Kerry]'s proposal, raising the minimum wage by Dollars 1.85 would mean more than Dollars 3,800 a year in additional income for a minimum-wage earner. Corporate supporters of Mr Bush and the Republican party have been adamantly opposed. This week, Mr Bush ridiculed Mr Kerry's gloomy portrait of the economy's performance. "We've seen four straight months of manufacturing job gains," Mr Bush said on Thursday.
