Summary:If mistrust in the region is especially directed at Japan, it is not lacking in relations between other states; for example, vis a` vis China generally, between countries in Asean, not to mention the two Koreas, and so on. Clearly what all humanity must hope for is that east Asia will evolve towards regional peace and prosperity where there will be both a solid cake of trust and the icing of economic integration. The panorama at present, however, is far from reassuring. Until and unless east Asians honestly address their past, the future of regionalism will be fraught with explosive hazards, hence the imperative of a more solid global edifice in which to integrate and contain east Asia.
