Summary:His appointment, to be announced at a press conference today by Jana Bennett, the BBC's director of television, signals that the corporation has taken note of criticism that BBC2 has become too reliant on lifestyle and makeover shows in recent years. But it should not be seen as a complete policy u-turn: Mr [Keating] is also a fan of recent BBC2 initiatives to bring culture to a wider audience with shows such as the Big Read, Great Britons and Restoration. Mr Keating's appointment leaves a vacancy at BBC4. A leading contender is expected to be Peter Horrocks, the BBC's head of current affairs, who was an unsuccessful but highly regarded applicant for the BBC2 job. Mr Keating takes over BBC2 at a time of strength for the channel. Under Ms [Jane Root], the channel has enjoyed critical and ratings successes such as The Office, the Naked Chef, The Weakest Link, Dead Ringers, Simon Schama's A History of Britain, The Fall of Milosevic, What Not to Wear and Marion and Geoff.
