Research in Canada and the United States shows drowsiness, dozing off, entering the early stages of sleep or switching off for "microsleeps" lasting less than a second are implicated in up to 40 per cent of serious accidents -- substantially higher than the 32 per cent ascribed to drinking and driving. (A high proportion of alcohol-related accidents happen between midnight and 6 a.m., when drowsiness also peaks: These crashes may be a combination of the two.) Colour Photo: Arlen Redekop, CanWest News Service / Roadworthy: While this tiny car would catch most people's attention, inattention while driving is the No. 1 reason for accidents, according to the American Automobile Association.
