Summary: | For a start, these "liberals" don't interpret the commands in the Bible as final pronouncements - unlike those church members who are aghast at the thought of practising homosexuals in the pulpit. The Bible contains advice, even laws, which are wrong, or don't apply today. It is taken for granted that some provisions in the Bible are out of date. Can anyone trust the Bible then? Yes, they can. But not as a simple rulebook or a manual for living. In the United Church, the question of the open acceptance of homosexuals into leadership has become a hot issue only in the past few years. Some congregations have experienced the ministry of pastors involved in homosexual relationships, and they have valued that ministry. Others have made it clear that homosexuals were not acceptable for ministry unless they remained celibate. |
