Summary: | The RCMP guard huts once stationed outside embassies and diplomatic residences in Ottawa have nearly all been replaced with a more sophisticated security system. High-risk embassies are now linked to an electronic surveillance system controlled by RCMP headquarters on the Vanier Parkway. This system, which uses television cameras to track the comings and goings of visitors, is backed up by regular patrols by RCMP officers in cruisers. The RCMP hut will soon be removed from the Turkish Embassy on Wurtemburg Street, where a guard was killed and then ambassador Coskun Kirca seriously injured in a 1985 attack by Armenian terrorists. |
