Summary: | Bach Complete Organ Works, performed by Sylvain Barrette and Danielle Dube in a series of eight recitals, at St. Andrew's Church, Kent and Wellington, Sundays at 2 p.m. His Concerto Op. 7, No. 11 for violin and strings, for example, is eminently forgettable but [Bach] was drawn to it to see how he could fill out its bare outlines. The result is a virtuoso piece that resembles the original only superficially and which contains extended cadenza-like interpolations that must have impressed Bach's parishioners. The musical backbone of the recital was a reading of the six familiar Schubler Chorales, some of the most famous in the Bach canon. Danielle Dube used lavish dollops of color to isolate the chorale tunes from the complex settings in which they were nested and succeeded in drawing attention to the melodies in a most effective manner. |
