Summary:Although The Family Markowitz is set in the less exotic locales of Washington; Oxford, England; and Venice, Calif., [Allegra Goodman]'s sharp eye once again scans the landscapes for the humor, irony and sadness that inevitably accompany Jewish disorientation in the Diaspora. [Sarah Markowitz] is the book's most complex character. Her first novel was followed by a cavernous silence that she filled by raising her children. She reviews other people's books and teaches a "Creative Midrash" class at the local Jewish center. Her students' bad prose reminds her of her own failings as a writer. The Family Markowitz sets a new and exemplary standard in American-Jewish literature. Goodman's work affirms that even when her characters succumb to the temptations of modernity, Judaism may still survive. Within her classically Jewish storytelling, she grapples with feminism, the sexual revolution, the Middle East and the balkanized state of American Judaism.
