Summary:"It's actually a funny story, or rather a strange one, because I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma when I was 13 years old. I was sick for a time and up until 16 when I was in and out of hospital," [Nolene Conrad] said. Conrad was just 20 years old at the time, but managed to surge from behind and overtake then national record-holder Tebogo Masehla on the final straight. Masehla would go on to reclaim the record roughly a week later, and lower it further in 2011, but Conrad's performance saw her selected to represent South Africa at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Though she may be assured of her ability to qualify, Conrad also knows what's at stake. Competing at the Olympic Games was a "childhood dream" but with the twilight of her career approaching, this year could be Conrad's last opportunity to make that dream a reality.
