Summary:As the 2014 chair of the Gainesville Chamber's Council for Economic Outreach and incoming 2015 chair of the Gainesville Chamber itself, I want to respond to the July 20 column that stated that the expansion of the "growth-promotion campaign of the Gainesville CEO is bad news for Alachua County and the state of Florida." An obvious example of "needing growth or new investment" to keep cost of living and expenses in check is found in a long-term solution to reduce Gainesville Regional Utilities' cost of electricity for commercial customers, which currently ranks among the highest in the state of Florida. Increasing demand through the recruitment of new users is a viable solution to make electricity more cost effective for GRU's commercial and residential customers. More users consuming more capacity puts downward pressure on the cost of electricity as fixed costs are spread out among more rate payers.
