Summary: | House Speaker Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, called the agenda "We Dare to Defend Our Rights" after Alabama's state motto. The agenda includes a bill requiring abortions to be performed in "the safest" medical environment possible, a gun protection constitutional amendment, local school control flexibility, repayment of a $437 million withdrawal from the Alabama Trust Fund, streamlined law enforcement, technology and legislative services, ballot explanation of constitutional amendments, career technical education, reducing red tape, allowing employers to opt out of contraceptive and abortion-inducing mandates of the Affordable Care Act, joining an interstate Medicaid block grant compact and combatting Medicaid fraud. All the key figures are now dead. [John F. Kennedy], who protected the students when entering the university, was assassinated in 1963. [George Wallace] died in 1998. The National Guard general who asked Wallace to "stand aside" at Foster Auditorium, Henry Graham, died in 1999. [Vivian Malone Jones] died in 2005 and Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, who confronted Wallace at his "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door," died last year. |
